The plantar fascia is a thick band of connective tissue on the underside of the foot that runs from the heel bone to the toes. This band of tissue creates the arch of the foot. Plantar fasciitis is when this tissue become swollen or inflamed. Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain. It occurs when the plantar fascia have been overstretched or overused and is especially common among runners and other athletes.
